Existence of static vacuum extensions for Bartnik boundary data near Schwarzschild spheres

Starting with Bartnik's quasi-local mass program in 1989, it has been conjectured that there exists a unique asymptotically flat static vacuum extension with prescribed Bartnik boundary data. We will review recent progress and discuss the existence for Bartnik data on a sphere near the data of a sphere of symmetry in a Schwarzschild manifold.
